I know they're all classic, apart from maybe Red Shoes and Lionheart-(but I like plenty of trax on both of those)-but doesn't Aerial rate as some of the best work she has ever done---

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, December 16, 2005 - 9:42 PMAerial is brilliant. Simply brilliant.
However...
I simply can't, with good conscience, say that I think it's her best. For me, it's still a three way tie between the Dreaming, Never For Ever, and The Sensual World.
Of course, it is a matter of opinion. :P -

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Sat, December 17, 2005 - 1:34 PMIn describing it to my sister (who hasn't heard it yet - she's getting it for Christmas), I told her that it was as good as "Hounds of Love", which is, for us, the standard to which all others are compared. I think if I had to rate it today, I'd put it here:
HOLove
Aeriel
The Dreaming
TSWorld
Never For Ever
TKInside
Lionheart
TRShoes
Its hard to put the albums next to each other, though. They are often like apples and oranges. -

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Sat, December 17, 2005 - 8:50 PMSure, for me it would be more like:
Aerial
The Dreaming
Hounds of Love
The Kick Inside
Never for Ever
The Sensual World
Lionheart
Red Shoes
Red Shoes really was quite dreadful, but still nobody's perfect. What I love about her stuff is that each has its unique character, flavour, texture colour, etc.
The light, its always changing. -

Sat, December 17, 2005 - 10:15 PMHere's how I rate 'em:
Hounds
Kick
Dreaming
Aerial
Never For Ever
Red Shoes
Lionheart
Sensual World
If you want to include the 12" Live EP I'd put that just above Red Shoes.
If you want to include the Hammersmith CD (which came aong with the Video for awhile) I'd put that above Red Shoes, too.

Mon, December 19, 2005 - 9:40 AMSo many tough choices. I do consider "Hounds of Love" the gold standard for her recordings, though. I think my ranking would be:
Hounds of Love
Aerial
The Dreaming
The Sensual World
Never For Ever
The Kick Inside
The Red Shoes
Lionheart
But when it comes right down to it, they're all pretty great, aren't they? -

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Thu, January 26, 2006 - 10:17 PMOverall I still give top nods to Hounds, then The Dreaming. Aerial would tie for third with Kick Inside (which captured me from the get) and Sensual World (not meant as a cop out, I just like those three apples and oranges about equally), while I would rank the box set of Singles (for all the B-sides) just ahead of Never For Ever, Lionheart and then the Red Shoes... actually the Red Shoes was the only one I wasn't overly fond of, although even it has one or two tracks I really like.
On Aerial...one thing that jumps out at me... there is something really extra great about hearing Kate's laughter. Even with the dozens of hours of BBC TV specials, interviews, and various concert recordings I have heard, I dont think I have ever heard her laugh like that more than a couple of times...to hear it over and over really puts a major smile on my face.
A caveat...I hated the Dreaming when I first heard it, but grew to rank it way up there...perhaps Aerial needs some time to grow on me as i have only had it for a week, and in fact only listened to the first disc a couple times. The second disk has been repeating in my car player ever since. It is great driving music.
For those who were big fans of the Sensual World, they should thoroughly enjoy this as I felt many of the songs almost sound like rip-offs of some of the Sensual World tunes for stretches...though you cant really rip yourself off...
I found it to be a step in the direction I like, but not far enough. I want a Tenth Wave if you will...
For those who like to read things into stuff that probably isnt there: the flowers are melting? I want to be up on the roof (repeat)? I couldnt help but think it sounded like she was jonesing for a GHB high...you know...roofies? Of course, that isnt Kate (is it?), but as much as I LOVE that song, it feels like an unintentional 'translation' error there. -

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 1:19 PMRoofies???? hey??? what the???? LOL

I'm a bit sad everyone disses TRS....I know it isn't a popular choice but with songs like 'Big stripey Lie' 'Moments of Pleasure' (pure class) 'Lily' 'The Song of solomon'....don't be too harsh!
In my opinion it's this (at the moment but it changes weekly!!!)
Aerial
TSW
The Dreaming
The Kick Inside
Never Forever
Hounds of Love
The Red Shoes
Lionheart -

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Mon, May 22, 2006 - 1:13 PMI'd still put Hounds of Love at the top. I find it difficult to get into some of Aerial, especially 'Bertie', which I find a bit sugar-coated for my taste. Sure, it speaks of a mother's love for her son but I can only sympathise with the kid if the other kids at his school get to hear the track. He'll have his head pushed down the toilet in no time! Or did I just go to a rough school? :)
On Aerial, I actually find 'Aerial Tal' my favourite track; even if unfortunately it's a bit short. My overall favourites are:
Hello Earth (but the entire 'Ninth Wave' cycle is a masterpiece)
This Woman's Work (just perfect)
Moving (what a debut album track!)
Anyone got any bananas? I've run out. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Mon, May 22, 2006 - 4:17 PMAerial is FAR from Kate's best. HOL is simply her masterpiece. The SECOND CD in the Aerial set is such a pedestal above the first CD that I would've bought it as its own album.
I think it would be fun now to hear Kate do an album of cover songs.

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Mon, May 22, 2006 - 5:11 PMi've been spending lots of time with "Mrs. B." and " A Coral Room." somehow these are turning into a couple of my favorite songs ever.
i heard her comment in an interview that she thought Mrs B was her heaviest song. i love the wistful mood. -
-
Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Tue, May 23, 2006 - 8:30 AMIt's funny that you've mentioned Mrs B Timothy, we're diving into the depths of this song on the KBforum at the moment. there are alot of similar and conflicting views. I personally go with the scenario that Mrs B has just heard word of her husband's death and retracts into herself and her home, even becoming childlike (slooshy sloshy). When she sees the shirt blowing on the washing line and she thinks it's him and then says 'it looks so alive, nice an white....'....to me this persepective makes sense, the music fits the mood perfectly.....though very sad.
I can understand why KB thought it was her heaviset song, thank you. -
-
Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 4:05 AMWell, i have to admit Mrs. B is the onlyt track on both CDs which I really don't like. However, its not because its 'heavy'-(I consider Coral Room much more weighty), I just can't stand the 'Washing Machine' chorus that is repeated 3 times in the song. I think it belabours the point as well as halting the lovely flow of the song. Once at the end would have been more poignant, I think. -
-
Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 4:42 AMMrs B. has to be the worst track on the album. That's why I skip it. That and 'my wonderful, wonderful......' yeaks! I'm sure I've annoyed people by that but it's an excellent album otherwise.

Tue, May 23, 2006 - 5:37 AMIf have to agree with you Tom 'THOL' is total genius. Aerial doesn't flow too well. I'm not knocking it but I'm starting to find myself skipping certain tracks now. That's not a good sign for it becoming one of my TOP 10 albums of all time.
-
Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 4:52 AMI agree that Hounds is better overall, tighter, leaner...just every piece thoroughly listenable. I also agree that the second Aerial CD is leaps and bounds better than the first. I can only listen to the first in my car about one for every ten of the second. Now I do believe this reflects a separation in camps of listeners...the same people that think Running up that Hill was the best Hounds song likely would enjoy the first album of Aerial...Running up that Hill is my least favorite HoL song (talk about repetitive), but I often hear even people who generally dont like Kate's music applaud it. Weird. -

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, June 16, 2006 - 3:32 PMHello everyone!
I find that Aerial is probably the most peaceful and happy work Kate Bush's produced. It's different because being a mother changes your perception of life. Kate Bush plays a lot with perception, sensitivity and different levels of consciousness (for ex The Dreaming was recorded at night and should be listened at night as she said).
She seems to throw at the world whatever needs to come out of her, always with style and solid technique. The B side works best for me. It's a nice idea to try to 'paint' the feelings, light and visual effects of a whole day through music.
The first CD gives a cheaper feeling. Elvis to appeal to the US, Joan of Arc for the French (it doesn't work either, I'm French and couldn't care less about this song), some Italian (it could at least have been pronounced properly just like the French btw,) etc...
Berty is nice and simple. A good song for her son.
Mrs Bartolozzi is funny. God knows how many times you end up washing when you have a kid around, so no wonder she wrote about this, without going into the sexual imagery.
All in all, I find this album more real or down to earth and it's nice to see that a singer and musician can produce some excellent work while remaining practical and happy. It's always easier to appeal to others with the usual sad songs.
As to my favourite songs on this album, definitely Sunset and Somewhere inbetween. I also like the energy of Aerial and the end of Nocturn. The Painter's Link sounds like Pink Floyd at first and it's well done.
Someone here mentioned that the recurrent 'Washing Machine' stopped the flow of the song but I think that's what the album is about (as well as what washing machines do throughout the program). Her music here really concentrates on playing with silence and sound and Kate Bush's voice changes accordingly throughout from whispers to richer tones she rarely used in the past. Someone said somewhere that her voice has changed. I don't think so. I think she's chosen to use a more medium range than before while keeping the lower and higher ranges she has to produce specific effects. This gives a smooth and easy finish, and this is an achievement in itself.
So I don't think any of her albums is better than the other although I'm less keen on her younger stuff because she was still searching herself and her own style. I love the dark and more masculine sensitivity of The Dreaming, I love the sensuality of the song The Sensual World. Running up That Hill feels like an explosion. Army Dreamers is sad and heavy but sung with such incredible lightness. Each of her song is an entity of its own which transcends itself to be felt by many. That's what makes a singer an artist. The rest is a matter of opinion.
She remains the singer whose songs I like to sing best. -
-
Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Sat, June 17, 2006 - 1:48 PMGoodness:>) hazel....that was great!!! I agree with everything you say (most everything!) I only wish I could say it like that!!! Are you a singer/song writer yourself?
The only aspect of your post I disagreed on was the comment 'cheaper' re KOTM and Joanni.:>o....I don't believe that she had a 'target' audience, she doesn't strike me as that type of artist. She articulates what inspires her at any given time, not calculating for EMI, surely !!! LOL (if that's what you meant...sorry if you didn't!)
Anyway, Sunset and Somewhere Inbetween happen to be my faves also. And I ALWAYS listen to 'The Dreaming' at night , except when I'm in a 'dark mood' then I shut the curtains LMAO.
Anyway, nice to meet you :>) -

Sat, June 17, 2006 - 2:52 PMI remember thinking that it would be a good idea to get the new Kate Bush album. I did so about 1 week after it was released. I won't be the same. It's one of those albums that you constantly refer to and can listen to it repeatedly without growing weary of it's content.

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, June 23, 2006 - 3:20 PMGood evening everyone and hello Willow,
Thanks for your comments. I've been singing Kate Bush's songs since that day when I was about 15, I bought The Dreaming. I was bored with the usual music, cliches and mostly bad voices or drugged up idiots, and when I saw that girl on the cover and read some of the lyrics, I thought she might be of interest.
What a shock when I played the album. My voice was an almost exact match to hers so of course I started identifying with her and made a point of learning every song on the album. At last someone whose songs I could sing really easily because they were just right for my voice. Then I discovered the other albums and went on buying them all whenever they came out. I sang Kate Bush here and there, met a couple of famous bands who really liked my voice and the Kate Bush feel of it but I never really thought of making a career out of singing for various reasons which Kate Bush might agree with. I may change my mind at some point and give it a real go. Never say never.
But the point in this story is to show just how big an influence she had on me and I'm sure I'm not the only one!
I published a few things amongst which a poem about Kate Bush to exorcise her influence on me. I had to get her out of my mind. I had to break the mirror. It helped me and for a while I stopped listening to her music to experience others and play my own things. Now I feel more detached from her although my voice will always remind me of her, It's a great pain in some ways. People like it but I'm me. But anyway, I think I can appreciate her music better now.
Aerial isn't an album I listen to constantly. I like it. It does grow on you, Kate Bush's music is this way. It's mostly subtle and requires an open 'heart'. Whether or not I'm right about some of the songs being cheaper this time round ( I thought it was more for personal reasons than to please EMI) doesn't really matter because all it all, she's great whatever she produces. She puts her heart and soul into her music. She has to feel it. It's rare and precious. She doesn't beat around the Bush despite her name, She goes deep into whatever feelings she has to let out or wishes to convey. An artist in all her ways. Who can match this? Surely not a lot of people.
Nice to meet you as well and all of you, Kate Bush addicts! -
-
Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Sat, June 24, 2006 - 1:50 AMWOW hazel that's sooo interesting, thank you ^__^
You bought the Dreaming as your first album at the age of 15?? bloomin' eck! what an album to start with!! and you loved it! It's my favourite second to Aerial but even some hardened Bush fans can't take the darkness of TD. I found out recently that even KB said it should only be listened to at night....so right!
Nice to meet you Hazel, I'd love to hear that voice! maybe one day you'll unleash it on us???

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Sat, June 24, 2006 - 4:25 PMGood evening,
Here is how I would classify KB's work although with great difficulty because I'm always going to be unfair to some of her songs.
Hounds of Love
The Dreaming
Aerial
The Sensual World
The Kick Inside
Lionheart
The Red Shoes
Never for ever (except for Army Dreamers which is one of my favourite songs).
As to my voice, Willow, maybe one day. As long as I can sing, that's the main thing for me. I don't need to try and be famous. It can take so much away from you and my family is more important to me than personal ambition which is ultimately pointless. However, I can't imagine not singing. It's something I need to do, not just something I enjoy. It's vital when you're oversensitive and it's the best way for me to exorcise my demons. (hence my love for The Dreaming). I ultimately like to sing and so I listen to music to this end. I can never just listen to Kate Bush for sure. I have to sing along and everything else just seems to fade in the distance, including the ckicken cooking in the oven! That's the beauty of it all. Singing to me is the soul speaking out. Kate Bush does it ever so well.

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, October 20, 2006 - 1:57 PMI agree with you about Aerial being the BEST I have heard from Kate for various reasons. It is an Album of warmth, and hope for the future, something that the rest of her work has been missing. Though each has its special place in my music collection, and if I may say so my heart. The Ninth Wave was my previous favourite, however found it rather Cold emotionally.and being sensitive to mood changes it can affect me at times. While Aerial is a totally different experience, Which of course there, but one thing I find is a cold story behind it. I feel that Kates voice has matured into a far stronger more rounded sound.
I have had many nights having very special/intimate sex to A sky of Honey, it flows well and the uplifting melody makes for some very special times for me and my sexual partners. Do you think Kate realises that she has written an album lots of people are having sex to????
I always been totally entranced with all her music, some of my favourites before Aerial being some of her more off the Wall pieces. Such as "The Dreaming", "All we ever look for", "The wedding List" and "Delius", and I do try and fly in the face of general opinion, The Red Shoes, I find to be nearly bordering on the concept album status of TNW and A Sky Of Honey. Especially if taken in conjunction with the Film from the 50's.
On another note I have enjoyed Kates Music since the First time I heard Wuthering Heights as a 15 year old school boy in 1978 I . Each album is a special point in her life, telling of a supposed descent into the weird and wonderful from Never for Ever to coming out the Other side with Aerial. If it takes her another twelve years to write another Album, then It will hopefully be of the same standard.
As for A Sea of Honey, I think it is more Traditional Kate, but each song is also special. Like Mrs Bartolozzi, Written about the mundane things every bereaved person goes through. Having been there I can totally relate to the meaning of the song. And who else can write a song about the Number Pi. That has got to be a future classic.
May she write on forever,

Re: Aerial best CD yet?
Fri, October 20, 2006 - 2:28 PMNO NO NO NO.....First i want to make it absolutely clear that I adore Kate and am a fan of many years standing, owning all of the albums on vinyl and cd, and I also have the Cathy Home Demo cd.....but i really can't enjoy Aerial......its awful...particularly Bertie (which turns my stomach) and pi which is just dreadful.....it got off to such a good start with King of the Mountain and then just went downhill.....Come On we all know that Kate can do better than this....
And whilst i don't have a favourite The Red Shoes and Sensual world are both special to me, additionally they seemed to make a break from the earlier work with THOL making the bridge from that earlier work to TRS and TSW....Please don't hate me for this response, but I really think that after waiting for 12 years i was hoping for something more...

Fri, October 20, 2006 - 2:49 PMI would put "Aerial" in the middle rank of Kate's albums. If "Sky of Honey" had been an album on its own, I think I'd have put it a bit higher.
I agree with Chemode about one thing: I can't listen to "Sky" in my car 'cause I just want to pull off the road and refresh the missus.
HOL is still, in my book, her masterpiece.

Fri, November 3, 2006 - 11:12 AMHounds of Love and The Dreaming are definately my two favorites...I really cant decide where to rank Ariel yet, and I think this is partly due to the fact that I have never listened to Ariel from beginning to end in succession as I have the other ones. I definately need to just listen to it in its entrirety before I can say where I rate it....but I do love it!
