I started this tribe back when Tribe first began. It was slow going and life did what it does, but this group has grown over time and has taken legs of its own.

As an absentee moderator who loves Kate more than any other artist in the world, I value a community of people who are passionate about her. My schedule doesn't allow me to be here - so I'm opening the moderator position to someone who can truly take the reins and grow this section of the Tribe community. If you have someone in mind, nominate them - and if you're inclined, nominate yourself. Based on popular opinion, I will select a moderator and pass the controls over.
I’ve never bootlegged anything before and I am a little nervous about this. This is a tape I found from about 17 years ago when I worked for Prince. It is the original version of Kate Bush’s song Why Should I Love You prior to the “collaboration” between Prince and Kate on the song. It is much, much better than what ended up on the album.

Michael Koppelman: October 14th, 2007
I should add that this is a mix I did from the multi-track tape that Kate sent. I pulled this off of a cassette tape that was rotting away at the bottom of a big box of old tapes.

I have a copy of the MP3 on my MP3 demo page: http://dongrays.com/kate-bush/mp3 (in case he takes his down).

======
She is renowned for her almost obsessive desire for privacy. But the latest attempts by Kate Bush to deter curious fans from peering at her seaside retreat have landed her in hot water.

High-security fencing, electronic entry systems, warning signs and blinding spotlights around the mansion on a remote Devon clifftop have all been described as intrusive and unnecessary by local residents.

But now the local council has received formal complaints about the singer's installation of CCTV cameras that spy on people using a secluded beach below her £2.5million property in the picturesque South Hams peninsula.

I'm the creator of an adult-themed puppetry troupe, and we've been working on a parody talk show called 'Syrus the Talking Dreadlock', wherein a muppety creature interviews puppet versions of well-known pop music celebrities. In our most recent episode, Syrus interviews Tori Amos, only to have Kate Bush gate-crash the show. A raging battle ensues.

Since I nearly got lynched for our Trent Reznor episode, I'll give the disclaimer: If you're opposed to puppet violence, or you're unable to laugh at the expense of your own idols, you'll probably hate the show... But I reckon there's a certain faction of Kate fan that would really like to see... say, Kate Bush banging Tori Amos' head against a stone wall... And for those of you of that disposition, this video's for you!

For the record, I really do admire both artists, though I lean much more heavily towards Kate, as I'm sure you can tell by the film:

It was, as I understand it, a collection of her brother's photos of her, all the way from childhood, and some little bit of writing, too. I think she signed it and did an intro or something, too, but am not sure, as I have never seen the book myself, except for some photos long ago.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here has actually seen it or read it. If not, I was thinking that one day, I might try to acquire it, but not with the usual idea of collecting and keeping it, as much as of sharing it by reselling it at cost to people who agree to also resell it (if only to resell it back to me so I can continue to share it out).

Just a thought. I understand the desire to collect, my own KT collection is quite large, but some things simply should be shared I think, too...

The former opera singer is to include an interpretation of Bush's classic 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' on the B-side to her next single in a bid to secure the coveted Christmas number one spot.

'Even God Can't Change The Past' will be the third single to be taken from Church's album 'Tissues & Issues' and is released on December 5.
Both of her previous singles 'Crazy Chick' and 'Call My Name,' went into the top 10 in the UK, but Church will face competition from the likes of Westlife, Crazy Frog and the winner of X-Factor is she is to enjoy a festive chart-topper.
Bush recently made a return to the charts with her comeback single 'King Of The Mountain' currently at number eight.

Okay, the songs are starting to sit with me and take their respective places in my head.

Favorites:

All of disc two, as a suite. But Nocturn -- which builds and builds until WHAM -- like a musical orgasm, it's over -- is truly the best song on the whole album. This is a work of genius. And Kate could have put disc two out all on its own.

As for disc one:

Favorite cut: How to be Invisible. Shoulda been the single, for what it's worth.

Song I liked waaaay too much when I first heard it, which is always a sign that I'm really not going to like it much the more times I hear it: Pi.
I like Kate's singing on this track but to be honest, it's about two minutes too long. I get the point.

Song I thought I was gonna hate but it's really okay: Bertie. On the scale of "Songs about offspring, real or imagined," this song is heads over tails better than Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" and nowhere close to the best song about wanting to be with your kid, "Memphis Tennessee" by Chuck Berry.

Song that just says "Take THAT, Tori Amos": Mrs. Bertolozzi. Boy, when Kate wants to write "sad," she can REALLY write sad. Which brings me to:

Song that I feel uneasy listening to, like I just walked naked into a funeral: A Coral Room. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful song. But she's really pouring her heart out there. Don't know how many times you want to visit someone in a mood like that.

In all, I would say that with the possible exception of "The Dreaming," "Aerial" is certainly Kate's "moodiest" album. She's gotten older. She's experienced the highs and lows of being "normal." She gets true thrills out of everyday life, like driving at night, skinnydipping in the ocean in the moonlight, leaving your watercolors out in the rain by mistake and raising your kid. She has lost a loved one and finally found the right way to express it.

No wonder everybody likes this so much. It has so much with which we can all identify!

When Fiona Apple's new album was set to debut, they had the whole CD on the media player for a limited time. If it's that good and people want it, that's the hook, isn't it?
In any case - I've decided that I don't want to hear it through my computer speakers the first time anyway, so I'll wait till Monday when I can get a hard disc into the main system and then let Kate take me away in high fidelity....
Kate Bush will speak in her first broadcast interview for more than 12 years this Friday (November 4).

The singer, who has been absent from the music scene in recent years, will break her silence in a special interview on BBC Radio 4's Front Row at 7.15pm.

She talks openly about avoiding the media, her frustration at completing her first album - Aerial - in more than 10 years and motherhood.

Bush tells John Wilson: "I'm very opinionated. I'm horrible to work with; I'm so fussy and picky. What's good is that I know what I want. It's when you don't know what you want that you're in trouble.

"There were so many times I thought I wasn't going to have the energy to see it (the album) through. I knew I couldn't go on any longer or it would have killed me. I was so fed up making it."

The reclusive artist reveals that she was only able to make a new album, her first since 'The Red Shoes' in 1993, because she has a studio at home and it was still a struggle to juggle the demands of music and motherhood.

She added: "I wanted to give as much time as I could to my son. I love being with him, he's a lovely little boy and he won't be little for very long. I felt my work could wait whereas his growing up couldn't."

On being a recluse she went on: "I am a private person, but I don't think I'm obsessively so. It's more that I choose to try and have a normal a life as possible. I don't like to live in a glare of publicity.

"My creative process was very time consuming and comes from a very quiet place... people seem to find that weird and strange, but its common sense really."

The Irish Times
Thursday, October 27, 2005

For 12 years it seems Kate Bush has existed only as a pervading musical influence. But now she’s back, singing in harmony to birdsong on her new album, writes Brian Boyd.

January 1978. Some whirling dervish with a preternaturally high-pitched voice and big box of theatrical tricks was keening dramatically about a gothic Victorian novel. Kate Bush was on Top Of The Pops. Aged 19, she had just had her first number one single with Wuthering Heights and nobody quite knew if this was some sort of one-off gimmick (she sounded like she had been at the helium balloons) or a new form of intricately intelligent pop music that came complete with interpretative dance movements. Over the years she answered the question by tearing up the pop/rock rulebook, transcending ephemeral musical genres, and creating a formidable body of work which continues to inspire. She argued with her record company about artistic control – and won. She built her own studio, produced her own work and refused demurely, to jump aboard the media-go-round for each new album release.

Lyrically, she was a revelation. She sang about the Big Things. Coming across like some freaky amalgam of Angela Carter and Emily Bronte, she dropped references to, among others, James Joyce, Wilhelm Reich, and Gurdjieff into her songs. And she also worked with Rolf Harris.

Since her Red Shoes album in 1993, however, she has been dormant. Sometimes it seems that there has been a rumour for her absence for each of the past 12 years. She had “lost it” or had become the “Greta Garbo of pop” and vanted to be alone. Her two closest friends in the music business, Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour and Peter Gabriel, would routinely have to field questions about her whereabouts and state of mind. It’s understood that executives in her record label, EMI, journeyed down to her country house every 18 months or so to see if she had recorded anything new – they invariably returned to London reporting that Kate had baked them cakes.

She existed, it seems, only as a pervading musical influence. Tori Amos and Bjork spoke about her in reverential tones and the current batch of female stars from Joss Stone to KT Tunstall to Dido were quick to single her out as a lodestar. Earlier this year, one of the newest art-rock bands on the block, The Futureheads, had their biggest ever success with a cover version of her Hounds Of Love song.

In his just-published workmanlike biography of the singer, Rob Jovanovic talks about how a few words written by Bush on her website in December of last year had an almost seismic effect on the musical world. Amid the pleasantries, Bush had written “the album is nearly finished now and will be out next year”.

Jovanovic writes: “Such startling news caused pandemonium...’The Return Of Pop’s Great Recluse’ exclaimed the Daily Express; ‘Comeback Kate’ led the Evening Standard. The Daily Mail pointed out ‘her Miss Havisham-like existence behind the high walls of a mansion’. The Sun shouted ‘This could be the biggest comeback since Lazarus’”.

Bush’s eighth album, Aerial, will be released on November 7th. Already, an awful lot is known about it: the first single, King Of The Mountain is about Elvis Presley and Citizen Kane (a Bush in-joke about the themes of disappearance and mystery); the entire second disc (it’s a double album) is taken up by a song-cycle which features Bush singing in harmony to birdsong; there’s a song called Mrs Bartoloozi which is a rhapsody about a washing machine and on another song she addresses the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter – the song is called Pi. On the latter, Bush can be heard singing out strings of numbers – which puts a whole new spin on the old adage about singing out names from the telephone directory.

Those fervent Bush fans seeking to decode the subtexts will have to do all the work for themselves. Kate Bush is not doing any interviews, whatsoever, to promote the album. It’s as if she knows that the questions will be skewed toward the inevitable “What have you been doing for the past 12 years?”, which is not something she wants to talk about. There is no mystery about what she has been doing – there was no breakdown, no drugs, no particular creative blockage. All that happened was that a number of people close to her died and a long-term relationship broke down.

She had a child (a boy, Bertie, now aged eight) with her present partner who is a musician. People forget that even at the peak of her fame, she always strictly demarcated her working and her private life. In fact, it was only a slip of the tongue by her friend Peter Gabriel that led to the news that she had a child, who was then two. Not even her record company knew. In an interview back in the early 1980s she explained her reticence with the media: “I think creative control is so incredibly important. I became quickly aware of the outside pressures of being famous affecting my work.”

It’s highly unlikely she will tour Aerial. She has only ever done one tour, in 1979. She always felt that tour was “misunderstood” in that she practically killed herself (and almost bankrupted herself) on getting the dance/drama aspects of the show just right – remember she did train under master Lindsey Kemp. Audiences wanted to hear her bang out the hits and cut out the ethereal theatrics. The tour was hit by tragedy when her lighting director fell to his death on stage during a concert in London. The event traumatised her.

The fascination surrounding the release of Aerial is not just because it marks the return of a stunningly original creative talent, it also has a lot to do with how much the concept of the “pop star” has been recast in the past 12 years. Whereas for Bush, the music is primary and everything else is a “distraction”, today’s pop freaks are encouraged to parade their relationships, break-ups, and rehabs all over the pages of glossy magazines and tabloids. The most mundane pop star behaviour is now captured on photograph and captioned with hyperbolic prose.

Bush’s insistence on leading a normal life and refusing to disclose every intimate detail of her existence puts her at an automatically mysterious remove from her contemporaries. She has turned down millions of pounds to license her songs out for advertisements, to make personal appearances, to tour, to launch, to endorse. When she signed her record deal with EMI she was just 16. The label gave her three years to finish her schooling, take dance and music lessons, and develop before Wuthering Heights (a song she wrote when she was 14) was released. Bush is of that generation where artists were developed over time – not given the make or break by a public phone-in on a prime-time talent show.

To put this in context, go back to a 1985 interview. At that time, there had been a three-year gap between her The Dreaming album and the release of the Hounds Of Love album. When pressed about this “huge gap”, she replied: “I’ve just been living a normal life”. And that is the same answer you would get today.

Aerial is released on November 7th.

While still at school, the precocious Bush was discovered by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, who was so impressed by the imaginative quality of her songwriting that he financed some demo recordings. EMI Records were equally taken with the product and in an unusual act of faith decided not to record her immediately. Instead, she was encouraged to develop her writing, dancing and singing in preparation for a long-term career. The apprenticeship ended in 1978 with the release of the extraordinary "Wuthering Heights". Inspired by Emily Bronte's classic novel, Bush had created a hauntingly original piece, complete with an ethereal, almost demented, vocal that brilliantly captured the obsessive love of the novel's heroine, and her namesake, Cathy.

It was no surprise when the single rapidly reached number 1 in the UK and established Bush in Europe. The follow-up single, "The Man With The Child In His Eyes", was typical of Bush's romantic, sensual style of writing, and provided her with another UK Top 10 success. The attendant The Kick Inside, recorded over the previous three years, was a further example of her diversity and charm as a songwriter.

Bush consolidated her position with a new album, Lionheart, which featured the UK Top 20 hit "Wow". During 1979, Bush undertook her first major tour. The live shows were most notable for her characteristically extravagant mime work and elaborate stage sets, but it was to be the last time the singer would tour.

An EP from the show, On Stage, gave Bush another Top 10 hit. After guesting on Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers", Bush was back in the UK charts with "Breathing" and "Babooshka". The latter, a UK Top 5 hit, was her most accomplished work since "Wuthering Heights" with a clever storyline and strong vocal. Her next album, the self-produced Never For Ever, entered the UK album charts at number 1 and further hits followed with "Army Dreamers" and the seasonal "December Will Be Magic Again".

At this point, Bush was still regarded as a mainstream pop artist whose charm and popularity was likely to prove ephemeral.

Her self-produced 1982 album The Dreaming suggested a new direction, with its experimental song structures, even though its less melodic approach alienated some critics. A comparative commercial failure, the album nevertheless proved to be highly influential on other 80s pop musicians, and in particular on Gabriel's increasingly studio-bound work. A two-year hiatus followed, during which Bush perfected a work that would elevate her to new heights in the pop pantheon. The pilot single, "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)", was arguably her greatest work to date, a dense and intriguing composition with a sound uniquely her own. The single reached the UK Top 5 and broke Bush into the US Top 30 for the first time in her career.

The chart-topping album Hounds Of Love soon followed and was greeted with an acclaim that dwarfed all her previous accolades and efforts. By any standards, it was an exceptional work and revealed Bush at the zenith of her powers. Songs such as the eerily moving "Mother Stands For Comfort" and the dramatic "Cloudbusting" (inspired by A Book Of Dreams by Peter Reich) underlined her strengths not only as a writer and singer, but most crucially as a producer. The outstanding video accompanying the latter featured Donald Sutherland. Another striking video was used to promote "Don't Give Up", a moving duet with Peter Gabriel.

An entire side of the album, titled "The Ninth Wave", fused Arthurian legend and Jungian psychology in a musical framework, part orchestral and part folk. After this, Bush could never again be regarded as a quaint pop artist.

Bush took an extended sabbatical to plot a follow-up album, although a new track "Experiment IV" and a re-recorded version of "Wuthering Heights" appeared on the chart-topping 1986 compilation The Whole Story. In 1989 she returned with The Sensual World, a startling musical cornucopia in which she experimented with various musical forms, even using the Bulgarian folk troupe Trio Bulgarka. The arrangements were as evocative and unusual as her choice of instrumentation, which included uillean pipes, whips, valiha, Celtic harp, tupan and viola.

There was even a literary adaptation à la "Wuthering Heights", with Bush adapting Molly Bloom's soliloquy from James Joyce's Ulysses for the enticing title track. The album attracted the keen attention of the highbrow rock press and Bush found herself celebrated as one of the most adventurous and distinctively original artists of her era.

Sadly, the music world has heard less and less of Bush in subsequent years as she has devoted more time to her family, guitarist/partner Danny McIntosh and son Bertie. A variety of artists contributed to her sole release of the 90s, The Red Shoes, including Eric Clapton, Prince, Jeff Beck and Gary Brooker.

Though this 1993 album rarely reached the creative heights of her 80s recordings, it was a notable success for the singer in the American market. Bush subsequently directed The Line, The Cross & The Curve, a 43-minute film based around six songs from the album.

There is no other recording artist in the world today quite like Kate Bush. In the course of her twenty-seven year career, since her dramatic arrival at nineteen years of age in 1978 with the hauntingly beautiful and instantly classic ‘Wuthering Heights’, Bush has built a reputation that remains unrivalled in terms of musical ambition, pioneering sonics, stirring emotional content and sheer originality. The fact that the world has been waiting for the release of her eighth album, ‘Aerial’, for more than a decade has, if anything, only added to the air of mystique surrounding her.

“I have been genuinely touched by the sense of anticipation I’ve felt from people,” says Bush. “I feel really privileged that people have been waiting.”

On the evidence of ‘Aerial’, her first album since 1993’s ‘The Red Shoes’, it may have been a long wait, but ultimately it has been a very rewarding one. A characteristically bold and expansive work brimming with atmosphere, mystery, passion and complex aural detail, the twin-disc ‘Aerial’ has already been declared a masterpiece by all who have heard it.

Realising that the amount of material she had accumulated in her time away was unlikely to fit onto a single CD, Bush made the decision to split the results in two, resulting in her first double album. Disc One, entitled ‘A Sea Of Honey’, comprises seven songs, ranging from the evocative lead-off single ‘King Of The Mountain’ through to the emotive reading of a lengthy section of the infinite series of numbers in ‘?’, to the playful, spell-like ‘How To Be Invisible’ and the moving, impressionistic conclusion ‘A Coral Room’. Disc Two, ‘A Sky Of Honey’, is a conceptual piece in nine parts, built around recurring motifs of light and birdsong, following a day from afternoon through dusk and night and on to sunrise.

“What is quite nice for me doing the two discs,” ‘Aerial’s creator explains, “is it allows me to play with the semi-classical style which I like – space and acoustic music – but also the band-based stuff with lots of drums.”

Bush has spent her twelve years out of the public gaze dividing her time between preparing the songs for ‘Aerial’ and looking after her son, Bertie, born in 1998. “I was having to work in really short little bursts,” she says of her prolonged absence, “and I’d never done that before. The way I’d always worked was to just stay in the studio for fourteen hours a day. I didn’t have that luxury to use the time in the same way. So there were lots of periods where really nothing much was happening. But in some ways I’d say it was very good for me to have had those kinds of restrictions. It was continually forcing me into a situation where I had to stand back from it.”

Brought to the attention of EMI Records at the age of sixteen by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour – as a prolific schoolgirl prodigy with already around two hundred of her own compositions – Kate Bush famously enjoyed a three year period of artistic development before being launched upon an unsuspecting world. Having released two albums in 1978 – ‘The Kick Inside’ and ‘Lionheart’ – and staged the mould-breaking theatrics of the Europe-wide ‘Tour Of Life’ the following year, Kate Bush began to assume control of her music with her co-production of ‘Never For Ever’ in 1980, yielding three startling, story-compacting singles in the form of ‘Breathing’, ‘Babooshka’ and ‘Army Dreamers’.

Her next step, into self-production, saw the creation of ‘The Dreaming’, released in 1982, a year in the making and still hailed by many as her best album, showcasing an almost filmic approach to her recording craft. Three years later followed ‘Hounds Of Love’, a stunning set of angular, rhythm-driven pop songs – including the strident ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’ and the majestic ‘Cloudbusting’ – backed with the side-long suite ‘The Ninth Wave’. In 1989 ‘The Sensual World’ followed (including musical contributions from David Gilmour, Nigel Kennedy and The Trio Bulgarka) and in 1993, ‘The Red Shoes’, featuring collaborations with Eric Clapton and Prince.

Over the years, Kate Bush has collected two Ivor Novello awards – in 1979 for Outstanding British Lyric (‘The Man With The Child In His Eyes’) and for Outstanding Contribution To British Music As A Songwriter in 2002 – while in 1987 she scooped Best British Female Artist at the Brits. Appearing at the Q Awards in 2001, she received a spontaneous standing ovation from an audience including former Sex Pistol John Lydon, Brian Eno, Radiohead and Elvis Costello, when accepting the Classic Songwriter gong.

And then, silence, until ‘Aerial’. The musicians credit list for Bush’s eighth album reveals new collaborations with drummers Steve Sanger and Peter Erskine and percussionist Bosco D’Oliveira, along with more familiar names such as Gary Brooker (founder of Procol Harum, providing Hammond organ), guitarist Dan McIntosh, drummer Stuart Elliott (who has appeared on every one of her albums), bassists Eberhard Weber and John Giblin and recording engineer/bassist Del Palmer. As such, over the years, Bush has gathered around her something resembling a close-knit musical family.

“There was a sense of being at play as well as at work,” Bush notes of the sessions for ‘Aerial’. “I think that’s very important because it is so hard and so frustrating sometimes trying to get an idea to materialise. It’s not an easy process. I really like working with people who are old friends, it’s lovely.”

Poignantly, ‘Aerial’ also features some of the last work of orchestral arranger Michael Kamen, who had scored for every Bush album since ‘Hounds Of Love’ and who passed away only weeks after his contributions to the album were completed at Abbey Road studios in October 2003. “What was great about Michael was his stuff was very visual,” says Bush. “He did such a fantastic job. It’s very hard to believe he’s not around any more.”

Now, in November 2005, with the release of ‘Aerial’, Kate Bush is following in the grand tradition of groundbreaking double albums. “I used to really like the double albums I bought of artists that I loved,” she states. “It wasn’t in a way so directly connected with you spending money on an object. It was somehow more of an artistic statement. It said, ‘Here’s my music’.”

AERIAL by KATE BUSH is released on November 8, 2005.

"EMI helped kick off a busy week for the music industry by hosting its quarter four retail conference at London's Abbey Road studios yesterday afternoon. The event heralded the first airing of Kate Bush's new single King Of The Mountain, as well as Pharrell Williams single Can I Have It Like That featuring vocals from Gwen Stefani, which is taken from his debut solo album which is signed to Interscope for the US and EMI for the UK. In turn, Robbie Williams and Sir Bob Geldof also turned up to rally support for their respective studio album and Live 8 DVD projects. Kate Bush's album will be a double set, with one disc made up of a single track, lasting more than half an hour, while the other will comprise around seven tracks. The album sleeve will also feature a child's pencil drawing, by the singer's toddler Bertie."

(Factual quibble: Kate's son is about seven years old, and not a toddler.)

The video for "Suspended In Gaffa" was my first exposure to her and after hearing that song I suddenly had to out and buy every Kate Bush album.

Are there any videos of hers that particularly stand out? Of the few I've seen, I really like the video for "Suspended In Gaffa"- not only for the song (which is one of my all-time favorites) but the weird, playful imagery in it- there's something about the rays of light filtering down from the gaps in the barn wall, Kate kicking up dust as she dances around, the windy trees in the background that really gets me for some reason.

Also, the video for "This Woman's Work" is so fitting for that song (and just crushing- seeing Kate die at the dinner table- oh no!).

Some of the more unsettling K.T. tunes for me include "Get Out Of My House", "Waking The Witch" and "Under The Ice". The video for "Experiment IV" is pretty creepy - with a ghostly Kate as the living spectre that kills all the technicians that are working on the "sound that could kill someone from a distance." Man - she writes amazing stuff. : )

"...pop Star Kate Bush, it was recently voted one of the all time great pop anthems. We’re talking Kate Bush and the classic Wuthering Heights. Since her explosion into the music biz Kate’s only released 9 albums to date, the last one was The Red Shoes some twelve years ago now. Well I can reveal that Kate has finally delivered her new epic to EMI and is ready for an Autumn release. According to my mole there, bosses were blown away by the ecclectic collection of styles and guest stars on the album - so much so that orders have been signed to an agreement to keep stum about the playback until it’s release later this year. While she’s only ever toured once before, Kate does have plans to make a mini-DVD to help promote the singles on the album which will also be out around the early part of next year. It’s great to have you back Kate."

This is much more of a difficult choice - upon what merits do you base such a selection? For me - I tend to go with melody and tunefulness before content, but it always helps if the song speaks deeply to me. Man - I'm having a hard time narrowing this down, as I expect will be the case with you hardcore fans as well! How about favorite song and two runners-up? : )

3) "This Woman's Work" from The Sensual World

I've cried my eyes out to this tune, it's so amazing. When I heard it on the previews for "She's Having A Baby" - I though, 'how perfect' - I wonder if the song inspired the film?

2) "Symphony In Blue" from Lionheart

What a gorgeous and intricate melody! It's a difficult tune to get out of your head once the humming starts..."the more I think about sex, the better it gets.." indeed!

1) "In Search Of Peter Pan/When You Wish Upon A Star" from Lionheart

This is pure Kate - an ambitious, shape-shifting song of beauty with an undercurrent of sinister inference. From the desire to become an astronaut in order to find Peter Pan to the delightfully atonal rendering of Disney's signature tune, this track speaks volumes to me.

*whew* - that was kinda difficult. Anyone else wanna have a go?

Composed of 22 demo tracks recorded on simple equipment, its slight background hiss and low-dynamic audio are often charmingly reminiscent of an old 78 record. But the album is nothing less than "Kate Unplugged," and is a catalog of embryonic versions of her music. It consists several signature songs before they were professionally recorded in the studio, but is mostly a collection of numerous breathtaking *unreleased* songs. They supposedly date from 1976 (though the album cover says '74), and feature nothing more than Kate, her piano, and her ethereal voice.

It is one of the most startling and moving albums I've ever heard. Opening with an achingly melancholy version of "The Kick Inside" with a haunting, longing tone that will make you weep (as will much of the album), the work progresses through a brilliant succession of stripped-down, emotionally wrenching pieces.

I found a track list from http://gaffa.org/dreaming/demos1.html
3. Feeling Like a Waltz {It Hurts Me}
5. Kashka From Baghdad {Kasha From Bagdad}
6. Camilla - UNRELEASED {Coming Up}
The first is a copy of a Christmas card that Kate sent out one year. I'm guessing it's from 1980 or 1981. If anyone knows better, please let me know!

The quote can be found on the second page from the link:

Kolessar began to work on psychoacoustic masking, which places a sinal just beneath the frequency of whatever is being transmitted. As Kolessar and his team worked through years of frustration, they discovered that the masked code's frequency could not be too low (where it would run into technical problems) or too high (where it would bother dogs and cats). Nor could it even modestly compromise the audio quality of a show or a song. ''We used 'Achy Breaky Heart' for a while for our tests, but then I just couldn't take it anymore,'' Kolessar said. So he switched to ''Don't Give Up,'' the Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush duet from Gabriel's album ''So.'' The song is an intricate work of sonic architecture (of some 26 separate tracks, according to Kolessar), which made it a challenge for the engineers. Kolessar led me into Arbitron's sound studio to listen to what his team came up with after a decade. He cranked a recording of the Gabriel song through a pair of $20,000 speakers and switched back and forth between coded and uncoded versions. ''You can't tell the difference,'' he said, more as a statement than a question. I agreed.

Budding Jordan cyber love ends in divorce
Sun Feb 6, 3:59 PM ET

AMMAN (AFP) - A budding romance between a Jordanian man and woman turned into an ugly public divorce when the couple found out that they were in fact man and wife, state media reported.

Separated for several months, boredom and chance briefly re-united Bakr Melhem and his wife Sanaa in an Internet chat room, the official Petra news agency said.

Bakr, who passed himself off as Adnan, fell head over heels for Sanaa, who signed off as Jamila (beautiful) and described herself as a cultured, unmarried woman -- a devout Muslim whose hobby was reading, Petra said.

Cyber love blossomed between the pair for three months and soon they were making wedding plans. To pledge their troth in person, they agreed to meet in the flesh near a bus depot in the town of Zarqa, northeast of Amman.

The shock of finding out their true identities was too much for the pair.

Upon seeing Sanaa-alias-Jamila, Bakr-alias-Adnan turned white and screamed at the top of his lungs: "You are divorced, divorced, divorced" -- the traditional manner of officially ending a marriage in Islam.

"You are a liar," Sanaa retorted before fainting, the agency said.

I was (and am) a massive fan of Peter Gabriel and Genesis, so I first became aware of Kate, natch, from "Don't Give Up". Spellbound by her voice from the first, I sought out her work in college, discovering "The Whole Story" and abosorbing it over the course of Senior year. I recall the music soothing and consoling me after a trying and nerve racking experience completing my final film project - the sounds litteraly brough me back to coherance, and forevermore I will associate her work with those days.

I own Hounds of Love, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, but since then, nothing - she seemingly receeded into privacy, leaving me with precious little understanding of her enigmatic persona. Is it true that a new album is forthcoming? Peter Gabriel took ten years between what for lack of a better word could be termed "pop" albums, though never ceased recording, experimenting, making music in that time. Has the same been true for Ms. Bush?

There are two CDs I have which are tributes to the work of Kate. One is calle "I Wanna Be Kate" and has a mix of artists, I believe from the Chicago area, who each cover a different tune of hers, rendering it in their own style. Now, some of these interpretations are radically different from her own music, and rare would be the listener who will like or hate all of them, or NOT like and hate some of them. Still very worth getting for those one or two versions you'll enjoy. I personally REALLY liked the gangsta version of There Goes a Tenner...and I am NOT a fan of that music genre. Also, I enjoyed a few of the radical renditions.

Another album by an artist called Gemma Price features is a compilation of Kates greatest, all pretty much straight renditions of Kate tunes...including a few of the harder to find B sides. There is nothing radical about this album, but the singer has a beautiful voice of her own and does a righteous tribute. I think it may simply be called A Tribute to Kate, but I dont recall exactly and am not at home just now to check.

I recommend both, for those jonesing for a taste of something somewhat new related to Kate.

Any others out there I havent mentioned?
